Lalbum Blue Train, registrato in ununica sessione il 15 Settembre 1957, rappresenta la prima volta in cui John Coltrane ha avuto al possibilit di selezionare i musicisti per una sua registrazione. in quella occasione Trane ha voluto al suo fianco il trombettista Lee Morgan, il trombonista Curtis Fuller, il pianista Kenny Drew, il bassista Paul Chambers e il batterista Philly Joe Jones. John Coltrane ha registrato con Lee Morgan in solo unaltra occasione: per l'album A Blowing Session di Johnny Griffin. Curtis Fuller ha iniziato invece la sua collaborazione con Coltrane sullalbum High Step di Paul Chambers, seguito da Sonnys Crib di Sonny Criss registrato appena due settimane prima di Blue Train. Per quanto riguarda la sezione ritmica, Kenny Drew era apparso con Coltrane sullalbum Chambers Music di Paul Chambers (da cui tratta la bonus track "East Bound").
