Tratto dall'omonimo fumetto della Marvel, il film racconta della giovinezza di due amici che scoprono di avere poteri speciali, Charles Xavier e Erik Lensherr, del loro lavorare assieme, con altri mutanti, contro la piu' grande minaccia che il mondo abbia affrontato, del loro allontanarsi causa un dissidio che li vedra' diventare arcirivali con i nomi di Professor X e di Magneto. Il film è ambientato negli anni '60, all'alba dell'era spaziale, l'epoca di JFK.
