Gli X-Men sono di nuovo in azione. Questa volta la loro missione consiste nel dare la caccia ad un mutante assassino che vuole attentare alla vita del Presidente mentre l'Accademia dei Mutanti è attaccata da ingenti forze nemiche. A contatto quotidiano con le diffidenze di una società che li mal sopporta, i mutanti devono fronteggiare anche un nemico imprevisto, un altro mutante con poteri incredibili che lancia un attacco devastante. La notizia dell'attacco provoca una protesta nei confronti dei mutanti. In tale ambito sono in molti a chiedere la reintroduzione del Mutant Registraction Act. Fra i più strenui difensori di questa idea William Stricker, un militare sospettato di aver condotto esperimenti sui mutanti.
