La turbolenta atmosfera del Texas all'indomani della Guerra Civile è lo scenario di questo dramma Western. Charlton Heston è Colt Saunders, un veterano della Guerra Civile che ritorna alla sua fattoria in Texas dopo anni spesi sul campo di battaglia. Ma una volta arrivato al suo Bar S Ranch si trova ad affrontare conflitti di tutt'altro genere. Innanzitutto con la donna che ha appena sposato, Lorna , che vuole disperatamente seppellire nel passato i suoi scandalosi trascorsi di ballerina nei saloon di St. Louis. E poi la minaccia più grande, che è rappresentata da una banda di spietati politicanti con l'intento di impadronirsi dell'imponente e preziosa tenuta di Colt.
