Helga, infermiera tedesca al seguito delle truppe della Wehrmacht che occupano la Iugoslavia durante la seconda guerra mondiale, è catturata dai partigiani serbi di Tito e fraternizza con loro, morendo nel tentativo di procurare le medicine per combattere un'epidemia di tifo. Sul ponte che divide i due contendenti il suo cadavere acquista una valenza simbolica: l'umanità al di sopra delle fazioni in guerra.
