Pip, fanciullo orfano, viene allevato dal maniscalco Joe Gargery, marito della sorella del ragazzo e, dopo la morte della stessa, sposo di Lidia. Un giorno Pip, alla vigilia di Natale, soccorre presso il cimitero un certo Magwich, un evaso che in seguito, tramite l'avvocato Faggers, lo farà erede di un'immensa fortuna e gli permetterà di divenire un gentiluomo in Londra.
