Dopo l'8 settembre 1943 un sottotenente ligio al dovere, non vedendo arrivare ordini, scioglie la fila del suo reparto mandando tutti a casa. La traversata del nord a sud dell'Italia flagellata dalla guerra e in preda all'anarchia lo fa maturare. Il film è una delle più riuscite mediazioni tra neorealismo e commedia all'italiana.
