Dopo aver terminato di prestare servizio come marinaio il giovane Asa torna a casa nella steppa del Kazakistan dove la sorella e il cognato, pastori, conducono una vita nomade. Prima di rientrare nella vita lavorativa e diventare a sua volta pastore Asa deve sposarsi. La sua unica speranza risiede in Tulpan, figlia anche lei di un pastore. La fanciulla è determinata nel rifiutare la proposta: Asa ha le orecchie troppo grandi e poi lei vuole andare a vivere in città, ad Alma Ata. Il ragazzo, parzialmente consolato dal fatto che anche il principe Carlo d'Inghilterra è ben fornito di padiglioni auricolari, non si arrende.
