A Gaotai, nel Gansu cinese costeggiante il deserto del Gobi, Guiying e Youtie, due anime solitarie malandate e in là con gli anni, vengono uniti in matrimonio dalle loro rispettive famiglie, desiderose di liberarsene. I due si trasferiscono in una casupola disabitata per vivere dei frutti della terra, trovandosi ad affrontare i bulldozer del governo, giunti per demolire la loro ed altre abitazioni fatiscenti, ma la coppia si dimostra tenace e piena di risorse pur nella povertà.
