Seoul, 1980. Kim è un tassista vedovo, indebitato e con una figlia da mantenere. I tumulti che caratterizzano il clima politico di quegli anni in Corea del Sud non scalfiscono i suoi valori da uomo medio. Finché un giorno Kim non si appropria di un cliente destinato a un altro autista: un fotoreporter tedesco, disposto a spendere 100 mila won pur di essere portato a Gwang-ju, nel sud del Paese, per filmare la repressione della protesta studentesca da parte dei militari e far sapere al mondo costa sta succedendo in Corea.
