Ambientato negli Stati Uniti, durante la presidenza Johnson, il film racconta la marcia di protesta che ebbe luogo nel 1965 a Selma, Alabama. Guidata da un agguerrito Martin Luther King, questa contestazione pacifica aveva lo scopo di ribellarsi agli abusi subiti dai cittadini afroamericani negli Stati Uniti e proprio per la sua natura rivoluzionaria venne repressa nel sangue.
