Charlie St.Cloud è un appassionato di competizioni in barca a vela a cui fa partecipare anche il fratellino Sam con cui ha un ottimo rapporto. Una sera però, mentre lo ha in custodia, sono entrambi vittime di un incidente stradale. Sam muore mentre Charlie sopravvive miracolosamente. Cinque anni dopo lo ritroviamo guardiano del cimitero in cui Sam è sepolto. Non va più in barca e ogni sera al tramonto allena il fratello che fa la sua puntuale ricomparsa.
