La "ronde" è un girotondo di storie amorose che si concatenano l'un l'altra attraverso un abile meccanismo di messa in scena. L'ambientazione è la Vienna dei primi del '900 e la storia vede protagonisti cinque uomini e cinque donne di diversa estrazione sociale e condizione economica che il regista Max Ophüls fa interagire tra loro due a due.
