In un villaggio della Francia centrale nel Cinquecento, dopo aver sposato Bertrande, adolescente come lui, il contadino Martin scompare. Otto anni dopo compare, quasi irriconoscibile, un uomo e come Martin, reduce dalla guerra, si presenta a Bertrande che, felice, l'accoglie in casa. Un soldato lo accusa di aver usurpato l'identità di un commilitone. Ne segue un processo in cui Bertrande sostiene che l'imputato è suo marito, ma quando ritorna il vero Martin si scopre che mentiva per amore. Il falso Martin è impiccato.
