Han van Meegeren è un giovane artista anticonformista che vive e pratica ad Amsterdam. La sua pittura è in linea con quella di maestri come Rembrandt e Vermeer ma i critici d'arte non lo capiscono e non gli danno corda. Han decide allora di realizzare una copia di un dipinto di Vermeer spacciandola per vera. Il suo lavoro diventa così produrre falsi per racimolare soldi. Fino a quando un giorno bussa alla sua porta un ufficiale nazista in cerca di un dipinto di Vermeer.
