Tratta dal romanzo (1894-96) del polacco Henryk Sienkiewicz, premio Nobel 1905, la sceneggiatura di Ennio De Concini, Francesco Scardamaglia e Franco Rossi punta su 2 linee narrative: 1) l'amore tra Licia e Marco Vinicio, cioè la trascendenza, l'epifania di un mondo nuovo e la cristianità 2) il rapporto tra Nerone e Caio Petronio, cioè la romanità, la decadenza e la coscienza della decadenza.
