Ispirato a un racconto di Maupassant, "Ombre rosse" rappresenta nella storia del cinema l'esempio più noto del western classico, in cui si ritrovano tutti gli elementi fondamentali del genere: dai grandi spazi (la Monument Valley resa leggendaria proprio da questo film) al tema del viaggio, dal clima di minaccia incombente per la presenza degli indiani all'intervento della cavalleria, dall'eroe ingiustamente accusato che supera una prova impossibile alla punizione dei colpevoli.
