L'americano Mathias arriva nella capitale francese senza un soldo in tasca, deciso a rifarsi una vita vendendo in fretta e furia l'appartamento nel Marais che ha ereditato alla morte del padre. L'appartamento però è occupato da Mathilde, ora novantenne, e da sua figlia Chloé, e non potrà essere di Mathias fino alla morte dell'anziana, perché così è scritto nel contratto. Come se non bastasse, Mathias dovrà pagare a Mathilde un mensile assolutamente al di fuori della sua portata, come prima di lui aveva fatto suo padre per quarant'anni.
