Jean Valjean, condannato per aver rubato del pane e restato in prigione lungamente, in seguito ad alcuni tentativi di evasive, ne esce inasprito ed abbrutito. Un caso provvidenziale lo mette a contatto con il Vescovo Myriel, che lo ospita. Il giorno dopo Jean Valjean, che nel frattempo ha rubato l'argenteria del Vescovo, non solo viene da questi salvato dalla prigione ma riceve in regalo ciò che aveva rubato. Questo dono lo mette in condizione di iniziare, sotto falso nome, un onesto lavoro che, col tempo, gli frutta l'agiatezza
