Bastian, un bravo ragazzo, si è trasferito in un'altra città: il padre Berney si è risposato con la divorziata Jane che ha una figlia, Nicole, con la quale Bastian ha continui litigi. A scuola un gruppo di ripetenti, i "cattivi", capitanati dal crudele Slip, comincia a tormentarlo: lo rinchiude nelle caldaie, lo costringe a rifugiarsi in biblioteca dove trova il signor Koreander, qui trasferitosi dopo aver venduto il suo negozio di libri.
