A Santa Marta, isola fittizia delle Antille britanniche, il governatore inglese Templeton, ha a che fare con due candidati dalle idee opposte. Da un lato il conservatore Maxwell Fleury, spietato, razzista, assassino, approfittatore ed egoista, e dall'altro lato David Boyeur, indigeno, consapevole dei problemi dell'isola, realmente attento alle esigenze di maggiore libertà della sua popolazione. Quando si viene a sapere che la nonna di Maxwell era un'indigena, scoppia il dramma.
