Jim, cresciuto con la tribù dei Sioux, che lo avevano rapito da bambino, viene adottato dal capo Aquila Gialla, che ha già una figlia, Luta. Quando viene mandato a Fort Duane, per controllare le intenzioni dei soldati, si innamora di Tally. Scoppia la guerra, ma Jim, nonostante il dolore per la morte di Luta uccisa dal capitano Vargant, scongiura il conflitto e poi ritorna al forte, dove Tally l'attende.
