Sir Arthur Blake ha ereditato titolo e terre alla morte del fratello. Con lui vive anche Benjamin, suo nipote nonchè vero erede, che è costretto a lavorare al suo servizio come domestico. Sir Arthur teme infatti che il ragazzo, sebbene nato fuori dal matrimonio, possa un giorno accampare diritti sull'eredità. Costretto dallo zio a partire per l'India, Benjamin riuscirà ad accumulare una grande ricchezza in Polinesia e deciderà così di tornare in Inghilterra per vendicarsi dei soprusi subìti.
