Nel 1944, mentre infuria la seconda guerra mondiale, un reparto americano rimane tagliato fuori dalle comunicazioni con il comando centrale e subisce disastrose perdite dai nazisti. Il generale Lane non si dà per vinto e, accompagnato dal suo autista, il sergente Murphy, cerca di raccogliere i superstiti e curare i feriti ma una granata nemica lo colpisce e lo uccide. Per caso Murphy viene scambiato per il generale e si trova a dover guidare un reparto. Fino a quando potrà reggere la finzione?
