James Jones, detto Angustia, vive raccogliendo scommesse clandestine sui cavalli: si tratta di una attività poco edificante, che fa guadagnare all'avido ed avaro Jones parecchi soldi. Le corse sono spesso truccate. Succede che uno scommettitore truffato, recatosi a protestare nell'uffico dei soci di Jones, viene da questi ucciso. L'uomo aveva lasciato sua figlia, Martha, nell'ufficio di Jones: questi la tiene con sé per evitare le indagini della polizia, ma a poco a poco, attraverso vari casi, Jones finisce coll'affezionarsi alla bambina.
