Secondo il padre Vladimir, la principessa Ljudmilla dovrebbe sposare uno dei tanti che aspirano alla sua mano e che offrono interessi al principato. L'amore di Ljudmilla è, però, per il cavaliere Ruslan che ne ottiene la mano dopo aver messo in fuga i barbari aggressori. Irata per l'accaduto, la sera stessa delle nozze la strega Naina rapisce la sposa e la consegna al mago Cernomor, uno gnomo.
