Il comandante dell'aviazione Joe Blake ha messo a punto uno speciale sistema per ridurre gli effetti della pressione in quota, ma i dottori Douglas Lee e Lance Rogers non sono del tutto convinti del progetto. Blake però non desiste e lo sperimenta su se stesso, riuscendo a provarne l'efficacia pur pagando un prezzo altissimo. A complicare la situazione contribuisce anche la rivalità sentimentale fra e Lee e Blake, divisi dalla comune attrazione per la stessa donna.
