Giappone, periodo Muromachi. Il Paese è ancora selvaggio, coperto di foreste, ma il progresso tecnologico comincia a turbare l’equilibrio ecologico. Nel nord dell’Arcipelago vive una tribù pacifica il cui futuro capo è il giovane principe Ashitaka. Un cinghiale selvatico attacca il villaggio, Ashitaka lo uccide ma resta ferito e colpito da una maledizione che potrebbe portarlo alla morte. Inizia cosi un viaggio che lo condurrà fino al villaggio dei Tatara, una comunità di fabbri, guidata da Madame Eboshi e minacciata da San, una ragazza selvatica allevata dai lupi, soprannominata Principessa Mononoke: “la principessa degli spettri”.
