Johnny Hondo è un giovane avventuriero reduce dall'Afghanistan. Il suo ex-comandante finisce, forse ingiustamente, in prigione e solo lui può aiutarlo e far emergere la verità. Così Johnny decide di partire e tornare in Afghanistan per riprendere dei documenti segreti che avevano nascosto in un autobus. Il comandante Ross, che è a capo delle operazioni, lo paracaduta in territorio nemico e Johnny deve vedersela, da solo, con i soldati russi e con il clima inclemente. Quando infine, dopo lunghe peripezie ritrova i documenti, capisce che in realtà quello che è stato mandato a cercare è un tesoro a suo tempo abbandonato dagli americani. Due ragazzi del luogo sono disposti ad aiutarlo, ma quali sono i veri "amici"
