Dopo aver completato lacclamata trilogia folk-rock nel 1979, i Jethro Tull tornarono lanno successivo con A, un album che introduceva un suono differente e una nuova line-up. Inizialmente concepito come disco solista del fondatore della band Ian Anderson, il titolo dellalbum formato da una sola lettera fa riferimento alle registrazioni in studio che erano appunto indicate con A per Anderson. Quando lalbum fu concluso, letichetta del gruppo Chrysalis insistette che venisse attribuito ai Jethro Tull, nonostante includesse solo due membri della line-up precedente: Anderson e il chitarrista Martin Barre. Ciononostante, lalbum e il tour sono stati ben accolti dai fan di tutto il mondo.
