In un paesino inglese, per uno strano fenomeno tutti gli esseri viventi si addormentano contemporaneamente per alcune ore in pieno giorno. In seguito, tutte le donne fertili risultano incinte. I bambini nati da queste gravidanze misteriose crescono presentando un comportamento apparentemente privo di emozioni che li rende inquietanti. Il professor Gordon Zellaby è il padre di uno di questi bambini, partorito dalla moglie Anthea con cui vive un rapporto problematico.
