Mary Portman è una psicologa infantile. La donna vive e lavora senza mai allontanarsi dalla sua casa, dove riceve a domicilio i suoi pazienti e soprattutto si occupa del figliastro diciottenne Stephen, ridotto in stato vegetativo dall'incidente stradale in cui è morto il marito Richard.
