LUGLIO 1969: il governo americano ha bisogno delle riprese di un falso allunaggio per battere sul tempo i russi nel caso la missione Apollo fallisse. Tom Kidman (Ron Perlman) un agente della CIA traumatizzato dal Vietnam viene mandato a Londra perché convinca Stanley Kubrick a girare il video della camminata lunare. Tom, però, non trova Kubrick ma Johnny (Rupert Grint), il manager da incubo di un gruppo rock. I due, per quanto assolutamente differenti non hanno altra scelta che lavorare insieme per portare a termine la loro missione e dare vita alla più grande truffa di tutti i tempi.
