Due killer arrivano in città e uccidono un tizio da tutti conosciuto con il soprannome di "Svedese". Potrebbe sembrare un regolamento di conti ma un agente delle assicurazioni si mette a indagare sul passato della vittima. Scopre così che, un tempo ottimo boxeur, si unì a una gang capeggiata dal criminale Colfax. E con lui commise un imperdonabile errore, innamorandosi della moglie... Tratto dal racconto "The Killers" di Ernest Hemingway, interpretato da due mostri sacri di Hollywood, Burt Lancaster e Ava Gardner, entrambi ancora agli esordi, "I gangsters" è uno dei più bei noir degli anni Quaranta, sapientemente costruito in flashback e avvolto nel buio e nell'oscurità. Siodmak, arrivato con questo film al successo anche negli incassi, impreziosisce il film con una regia raffinatissima, dalla sontuosa sequenza d'apertura a quella finale sulla scalinata.
