Sokurov mette in scena una diabolica perseveranza nell’errore costringendo i suoi personaggi a un procedere senza sosta, a una letterale erranza tra boschi, case, lande, ghiacciai. Il protagonista del film non si ferma un istante, tanta è la sua sete di sapere e tanta è la lontananza dalla meta. A questo movimento senza soluzione di continuità si aggiunge una forza opposta ma altrettanto intensa e inestinguibile che (co) stringe gli esseri umani presenti nell’inquadratura, obbligandoli a farsi largo l’uno sugli altri, a scavalcarsi ad ogni occasione.
