Coverdale ha registrato The Purple Album con il chitarrista Reb Beach, il bassista Michael Devin, il chitarrista Joel Hoekstra (al suo primo album con i Whitesnake) e il batterista Tommy Aldridge, riapparendo in un album in studio dei Whitesnake per la prima volta da Slip Of The Tongue del 1989. La band ha scelto alcune gemme da Burn (1974), Stormbringer (1974) e Come Taste The Band (1975), proponendo rivisitazioni ispirate dei brani preferiti dai fan come "Lay Down Stay Down", "Lady Double Dealer" e "You Keep On Moving".
La versione 2-CD/Blu-ray di THE PURPLE ALBUM: SPECIAL GOLD EDITION va oltre l\'originale con l\'aggiunta di registrazioni dal vivo e video dei concerti del Purple Tour ("The Gypsy", "Mistreated"), video musicali ufficiali ("Sail Away", "You Fool No One") e un assortimento di materiale inedito, compresi sei mix alternativi di brani
dell\'album. Il Blu-ray offre anche un dietro le quinte della realizzazione dell\'album e un commento canzone per canzone di Coverdale.
