Charles Mingus è nato in una base militare a Nogales, in Arizona il 22 Aprile del 1922 (morì il 5 Gennaio 1979). Si stabilì a New York negli anni Cinquanta, e lì ha suonato e registrato con i migliori musicisti di quel periodo - Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk e Duke Ellington, Max Roach. Inoltre Mingus si affermò rapidamente come leader, diventando uno dei pochi bassisti jazz ad assumere questo ruolo. Era anche un buon pianista, e avrebbe potuto fare carriera anche su quello strumento. Verso la metà degli anni Cinquanta aveva già fondato le sue case editrice e di registrazione per proteggere e documentare il suo crescente repertorio di musica originale. Aveva anche fondato il "Jazz Workshop", un gruppo che ha consentito a giovani compositori di proporre le loro nuove opere. Dal fermento di quegli anni nasce un album estremamente personale e significativo: Mingus Ah Um. Un album che mette in mostra ancora una volta il talento unico di Mingus e la sua capacità di sondare terreni inesplorati.
