Lalbum Pithecanthropus Erectus rappresentò per Charles Mingus la definitiva affermazione come un leader e compositore. Lalbum lo vede affiancato da Jackie McLean al sax alto, J.R. Montrose al sax tenore, Mal Waldron al pianoforte e Willie Jones alla batteria. Il brano che dà nome allalbum all'album è uno dei grandi capolavori di Mingus, un poema sinfonico in quattro movimenti che rappresenta l'evoluzione dell'uomo. Come bonus allalbum originale è stata aggiunta una versione dal vivo del brano Love Chant registrata da Mingus al Café Bohemia di New York il 18 Dicembre 1955.
