Poche band hanno influenzato la scena acustica, newgrass e jam quanto i Leftover Salmon. Raccolta l?eredita dei pionieri del progressive bluegrass (su tutti i Seldom Scene e i Newgrass Revival), hanno rappresentato una fonte di ispirazione per un?intera generazione di artisti, tra cui Billy Strings, Greensky Bluegrass e Yonder Mountain String Band. In ?Grass Roots?, disponibile in CD e in vinile rosa opaco (in edizione limitata), i Leftover Salmon riflettono ora appunto sulle origini, attingendo dal repertorio che i Salmon Heads e la Left Hand String Band hanno suonato nelle prime jam al Telluride Bluegrass Festival e riproponendo con un taglio bluegrass brani di Bob Dylan, David Bromberg e Grateful Dead. Nel disco si aggiungono alla formazione ufficiale della band Jay Starling a dobro, lap steel e tastiere, nonche ospiti di spicco come Billy Strings, Oliver Wood e Darol Anger.
