Miles Ahead è stata la prima registrazione di Miles Davis con la Gil Evans Orchestra, ma non si trattava di certo della prima collaborazione di Evans con Davis. Si conoscevano e rispettavano a vicenda fin dalla metà degli anni Quaranta e nel 1948-49 sono stati i due fautori principali di Birth of the Cool, ossia dello storico album e del nuovo suono "cool" che venne ad esso associato e che ha dato vita ad un nuovo stile jazz. Miles Ahead è un album altamente raffinato in cui latmosfera, il repertorio e le sfumature di ogni singola improvvisazione sono state attentamente selezionate.
