Il quintetto fondato da Miles Davis nel 1955 è considerato come uno dei più grandi gruppi della storia del jazz e riuniva John Coltrane al sax, tenore, Red Garland al piano, Paul Chambers al contrabbasso e Philly Joe Jones alla batteria. Mentre tre tracce contenute in questo LP vedono come protagonista questo quintetto, gli altri brani sono costituiti da una sessione del 1958 di unaltra straordinaria formazione: il Miles Davis Sextet con John Coltrane al sax tenore, Cannonball Adderley al sax alto, Bill Evans al piano, Paul Chambers al contrabbasso e Jimmy Cobb alla batteria. Due brani tratti dalle stesse sessioni, ma non presenti sullLP originale, sono stati aggiunti qui come bonus.
