RIP IT UP: THE BEST OF SPECIALTY RECORDS raccoglie 18 gemme dall'incredibile catalogo dell'agguerrita storica etichetta che fondata da Art Rupe nella California degli anni 50 puntò su giovani astri del nascente R'n'B. Un mercato ed un genere musicale sostanzialmente trascurato dalle grandi etichette ma richiesto da un pubblico nero, spesso costretto ad emigrare altrove e desideroso di portare con sé una certa aria di casa. La competenza e le doti del fondatore finirono con il vincere la scommessa: partendo da Jimmy Liggins, Percy Mayfield e Lloyd Price, agli inizi stentati (e alla lotta per la sopravvivenza) del 1953-54 seguì il vero colpo grosso: la scoperta e l'ingaggio di un certo Little Richard, seguito da Roy Milton, Sam Cooke.
