I Weather Report sono stati uno dei gruppi jazz-fusion piu influenti della loro epoca e hanno superato molti dei loro contemporanei, come gli Headhunters di Herbie Hancock e la Mahavishnu Orchestra. Nonostante i numerosi cambi di organico avvenuti nel corso dei 16 anni di vita, il gruppo continuo a creare musica innovativa sotto la guida di Joe Zawinul.
