The Bridge è uno degli album più celebri di Sonny Rollins, registrato tra gennaio e febbraio 1962 e pubblicato nello stesso anno. Segnò il ritorno di Rollins alle registrazioni dopo la sua famosa pausa sabbatica di tre anni (1959-1961), quando si allontanò dalla scena jazzistica all\'apice della sua carriera per dedicarsi allo studio intensivo.Era il 1959 e Rollins era già uno dei sassofonisti più rispettati al mondo: aveva realizzato Saxophone Colossus (1956), A Night at the Village Vanguard (1957) e The Freedom Suite (1958). Musicisti e critici si chiedevano perché avesse smesso di registrare al culmine della sua carriera, ma lui voleva affinare la sua tecnica, ampliare il suo sound e superare quelli che riteneva essere i limiti del suo modo di suonare.
