Come era prassi comune durante i primi anni '50, lLP Recital by Oscar Peterson non è composto da una singola sessione, ma da una serie di date simili registrate tra il 1952 e il 1954 con musicisti differenti. In quattro di queste tracce si sentono Ray Brown al basso e Barney Kessel alla chitarra. Queste sono le registrazioni più liriche: Kessel assume un ruolo di primo piano in "Pompton Turnpike" e l'influenza del Nat King Cole Trio su Peterson è evidente sulla sua lettura di "Cherokee". Il blues "Willow Weep for Me" vede anche la partecipazione di Irving Ashby (chitarrista del trio per un breve periodo prima dell'arrivo di Barney Kessel). Il rovescio della medaglia è dato dallingresso di Herb Ellis alla chitarra, che sembra stimolare Peterson a raggiungere tonalità più alte, e di Louis Bellson alla batteria. L'aggiunta di Ellis.
