Fu Charles Mingus che, a met degli anni Cinquanta, per primo cerc di modificare il suono di Jackie McLean, che in quel momento era fortemente legato allinfluenza di Charlie Parker. Non ho mai suonato come Bird, ma era la mia missione, ha detto McLean nel corso di una intervista radiofonica. Non mi importava che la gente pensasse che lo avevo copiato. Mingus stato quello che mi ha veramente spinto lontano dallidea e mi ha praticamente costretto a ricercare il mio suono. In questo LP troviamo due importanti registrazioni di McLean. Sul lato A, una registrazione in sestetto (con McLean al sax tenore), che ha prodotto tre tracce in seguito pubblicate sullalbum Makin The Changes; sul Lato B tre ballate in un quartetto che furono pubblicate su Makin The Changes e McLean's Scene.
