Negli anni Cinquanta, dopo aver registrato con piccoli gruppi (per la Commodore) e big bands con archi (per la Decca), Billie Holiday ha firmato il suo ultimo contratto a lungo termine con Norman Granz. Granz l'aveva voluta come stella dei suoi tour Jazz at the Philharmonic di metà anni Quaranta e quando la mise sotto contratto nel 1952, non solo cercò di ripetere con piccoli gruppi la magia di quei giorni, ma decise anche di pubblicare alcune delle registrazioni di Holiday effettuate in quel periodo. Lalbum riunisce registrazioni effettuate dal vio tra il 1945 e il 1947.
