Il ritorno di Bill Evans alla piena attivita nel 1962 avvenne quasi un anno dopo le celebri registrazioni del suo trio al Village Vanguard. Appena dieci giorni dopo quella classica sessione "live", il bassista Scott LaFaro era morto in un incidente stradale. Evans, profondamente scosso, alla fine riformo il suo trio con lo stesso batterista (Paul Motian) e Chuck Israels al basso. La loro prima visita in studio aveva un duplice scopo: realizzare un album di sole ballate, Moonbeams, e allo stesso tempo questo set "normale".
