Il periodo d\'oro del pop barocco americano - o pop da camera - va dal 1966 alla fine degli anni Settanta. Utilizzava quartetti d\'archi, clavicembali e fiati per creare una malinconia da estate ad autunno del tutto nuova e molto lontana dal rock\'n\'roll come lo avrebbe conosciuto Eddie Cochran. I musicisti del pop barocco provenivano spesso da un background folk, con un\'affinità per la strumentazione acustica. La prima band di Linda Ronstadt, gli Stone Poneys, aveva introdotto l\'autoharp nella propria formazione nel 1965, mentre artisti del calibro di Bonnie Dobson e Nico sperimentavano con un quartetto d\'archi, alla ricerca di diverse direzioni post-elettriche dylaniane.
