Basie Rides Again! è stato pubblicato da Norman Granz per la sua etichetta Verve nel 1956, ma i brani inclusi nellalbum provengono da varie sessioni che Basie aveva registrato nel 1952 e che Granz aveva in parte pubblicato su etichetta Clef. Queste sessioni hanno visto la partecipazione di artisti del calibro di Charlie Shavers, Joe Newman, Paul Quinichette e Eddie Lockjaw Davis, oltre allonnipresente Freddie Green come membro della sezione ritmica. Queste sessioni sono anche la preziosa testimonianza storica della prima collaborazione tra Basie e il suo amico e ammiratore di Oscar Peterson, che sostituisce il leader al pianoforte su Be My Guest e si unisce al gruppo su due blues
